The film tells the origin story of Bruce Banner, a brilliant scientist who becomes the Hulk after a scientific experiment goes wrong. Bruce is working on a project to develop a super-soldier serum that could enhance human abilities. During an experiment involving gamma radiation, Bruce is accidentally exposed to massive levels of gamma rays. This exposure triggers a transformation that occurs whenever he experiences extreme stress or anger: he becomes the Hulk, a giant green-skinned creature with incredible strength and near invulnerability.
After the accident, Bruce goes on the run from the U.S. military, led by General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross, who sees him as a dangerous weapon. Bruce travels the country, seeking a cure for his condition while trying to avoid causing harm. He isolates himself in remote areas, fearing that if he loses control, he could hurt innocent people.
Meanwhile, the military is also conducting experiments to recreate the Hulk’s power. They develop a monstrous new being known as the Abomination, Emil Blonsky, a soldier who deliberately injects himself with a variant of Banner’s gamma serum. Blonsky transforms into a monstrous creature even stronger than the Hulk, but with less control and a more aggressive nature.
Bruce eventually confronts his own fears and decides he must face the threat of the Abomination to protect the people around him. The climax of the film takes place in Harlem, New York City, where the Hulk battles the Abomination in a massive, destructive fight. The Hulk is ultimately victorious, but Bruce realizes that he cannot completely escape his condition or the military’s pursuit.
The film ends with Bruce continuing to seek a cure for the Hulk, while hinting at future collaborations with other heroes. A post-credit scene introduces Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who informs Bruce about the formation of the Avengers initiative, linking the Hulk to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
