Thor 2: The Dark World (2013)

Thor: The Dark World opens with a prologue recounting an ancient war thousands of years ago, where Bor, Odin's father, battled the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, led by Malekith. Malekith sought to plunge the universe into eternal darkness using a powerful cosmic force called the Aether (later revealed to be an Infinity Stone). Bor defeated Malekith's forces, seized the Aether, and buried it, while Malekith and a handful of his warriors went into suspended animation, awaiting the next cosmic alignment.

In the present day, following the events of The Avengers, Thor is busy bringing peace and order to the Nine Realms, which have fallen into chaos since the Bifrost Bridge was destroyed. Loki is imprisoned in Asgard for his crimes against Earth. On Earth, Dr. Jane Foster is in London, still heartbroken over Thor's departure, and investigating strange gravitational anomalies during a rare cosmic event known as the Convergence, where the Nine Realms align and portals between them become unstable.

During her investigation, Jane accidentally stumbles upon a hidden portal and is transported to another dimension. There, she comes into contact with the Aether, which infects her body, granting her strange powers and inadvertently reawakening Malekith and the Dark Elves. Sensing her distress, Heimdall alerts Thor, who rushes to Earth and brings Jane back to Asgard for her protection and to understand what has happened to her.

Odin recognizes the Aether and warns that it will not only kill Jane but will also herald a catastrophic prophecy. He recounts the ancient war and explains that the Aether is a primordial force of destruction. Malekith, now fully awakened, launches a devastating attack on Asgard, seeking to retrieve the Aether from Jane. During the chaotic assault, Thor's mother, Queen Frigga, bravely defends Jane but is tragically killed by Malekith, deeply grieving Thor, Loki, and Odin.

Driven by vengeance for his mother's death and a sense of urgency, Thor defies Odin's orders, who is consumed by grief and vows to keep Jane in Asgard. Thor decides that the Aether must be separated from Jane and destroyed on Svartalfheim, Malekith's home world. To achieve this, he forms an uneasy alliance with his imprisoned brother, Loki, who knows of a secret portal to Svartalfheim. Loki agrees to help, ostensibly for revenge against Malekith for killing their mother.

Thor, Loki, Jane, and some loyal Asgardian warriors travel to Svartalfheim. Loki seemingly betrays Thor, handing Jane over to Malekith to extract the Aether. However, this is a ruse to get the Aether out of Jane. After the Aether is removed, Thor attempts to destroy it, but it proves indestructible. In the ensuing battle, Loki seemingly sacrifices himself to save Thor from Algrim, who has transformed into the powerful Kursed. Thor mourns his brother's apparent death.

Malekith, now merged with the Aether, races to Earth, intending to unleash its full power during the peak of the Convergence in Greenwich, London, which would plunge the entire universe into eternal darkness. Thor returns to Earth and, with the help of Jane, Darcy, Dr. Selvig (who uses his knowledge of the Convergence to create specialized devices), and his fellow Asgardians, confronts Malekith in a chaotic battle that spans multiple dimensions due to the unstable portals.

Through clever tactics and the scientific devices provided by Selvig, Thor manages to defeat Malekith, transporting him back to Svartalfheim, where the Dark Elf is crushed by his own damaged ship.

Upon returning to Asgard, Thor declines Odin's offer to take the throne, explaining that he is not fit to be king and prefers to protect the Nine Realms on his own terms. He recounts Loki's sacrifice and expresses his desire to remain on Earth with Jane. As Thor leaves, it is revealed that Loki is not dead but has secretly impersonated Odin and taken his place on the throne, leaving Thor unknowingly deceived.

In a mid-credits scene, Sif and Volstagg deliver the Aether to the Collector, explaining that Asgard cannot house two Infinity Stones (the Tesseract being the other), thereby confirming the Aether's nature as an Infinity Stone and expanding the larger MCU narrative. A post-credits scene shows Jane and Thor reunited on Earth.
