The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, is a superhero action film that brings together several powerful heroes to defend Earth from a major alien invasion. The story begins when Loki, the adopted brother of Thor, arrives on Earth through a portal created by the powerful cosmic energy source known as the Tesseract. Loki steals the Tesseract from a secret research facility and uses a magical scepter that allows him to control people’s minds. Among those he controls are the scientist Dr. Erik Selvig and the skilled archer Clint Barton (Hawkeye). With their help, Loki begins preparing a plan to conquer Earth.
Recognizing the seriousness of the threat, Nick Fury, the director of the global security agency S.H.I.E.L.D., decides to activate the “Avengers Initiative.” This plan involves bringing together a group of extraordinary individuals to stop dangers too great for normal forces. Fury and his agents recruit several heroes: Tony Stark (Iron Man), a genius billionaire inventor with a powerful armored suit; Steve Rogers (Captain America), a super-soldier from World War II; Bruce Banner, a scientist who transforms into the Hulk when he becomes angry; Thor, the powerful god of thunder and Loki’s brother; Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), a highly trained spy; and Clint Barton (Hawkeye), an expert archer.
The team gathers aboard a massive flying aircraft carrier called the Helicarrier. However, the heroes do not get along at first. They argue about their different values, personalities, and methods. Tony Stark questions the motives of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America doubts Stark’s responsibility, and Bruce Banner fears losing control of the Hulk. Meanwhile, Loki continues manipulating events from the outside.
During an attack on the Helicarrier by Loki’s forces, chaos erupts. Hawkeye, still under Loki’s mind control, attacks the ship from the inside. Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk and begins destroying parts of the carrier. Loki escapes from captivity and kills Agent Phil Coulson, a loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who believed strongly in the Avengers. Coulson’s death becomes a turning point that motivates the heroes to stop fighting each other and unite against Loki.
