Marvel Studios: Iron Man 2 (2010)

Iron Man 2 picks up six months after Tony Stark publicly revealed his identity as Iron Man. He has since become a global celebrity, using his suit to maintain world peace. However, his public bravado hides a grim secret: the palladium core in his arc reactor, which keeps him alive and powers his suit, is slowly poisoning him. Unwilling to reveal his deteriorating health, Tony begins to act erratically and recklessly. €

This creates several conflicts:
• Government Pressure: The U.S. government, led by Senator Stern, demands that Tony hand over his Iron Man technology, viewing it as a national security asset rather than personal property. Tony stubbornly refuses, believing that no one else is capable of handling his suits. • The Rise of Ivan Vanko (Whiplash): In Russia, Ivan Vanko, the son of Anton Vanko, a former partner of Tony's father, Howard Stark, watches Tony's public reveal. Anton Vanko died in poverty and disgrace, believing Howard Stark stole his arc reactor designs. Fueled by a deep-seated desire for revenge against the Stark legacy, Ivan builds his own arc reactor-powered weapon: electrified whips capable of slicing through anything. He attacks Tony at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Tony is racing. Tony, caught off guard, quickly deploys his Mark V "briefcase suit" and defeats Vanko. ‚ • Justin Hammer's Ambition: Rival weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer is deeply impressed by Vanko's technology and orchestrates his escape from prison. Hammer hires Vanko to develop a new line of armored suits to upstage Stark Industries and become the military's primary contractor. Vanko, however, secretly plans to use Hammer's resources to create an army of drones to destroy Tony and his legacy. ƒ
Amidst these external pressures, Tony's health continues to worsen, leading him to believe he is dying. He appoints Pepper Potts as the new CEO of Stark Industries and hires Natalie Rushman as his new assistant. Tony's reckless behavior, including a drunken birthday party where he endangers guests in his Iron Man suit, forces his best friend, Lt. Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes, to confiscate a Mark II prototype suit, which is later weaponized by Hammer and becomes the "War Machine" armor. „

Natalie Rushman is eventually revealed to be Natasha Romanoff, a highly skilled S.H.I.E.L.D. agent sent by Director Nick Fury to monitor Tony. Fury confronts Tony, explaining that his father, Howard Stark, had also faced similar challenges and reveals a hidden message from him. This message contains blueprints for a new, safer element that Tony can synthesize to replace the toxic palladium in his arc reactor, effectively curing his poisoning. …

The climax occurs at the Stark Expo, where Hammer unveils Vanko's drones and the War Machine armor. Vanko remotely takes control of all the drones and Rhodey's suit, turning them against Tony. Tony, now revitalized by his new element and upgraded Mark VI armor, teams up with Rhodey (who regains control of his suit thanks to Natasha Romanoff) to fight Vanko and his drone army. They eventually defeat Vanko, who attempts a final act of revenge by initiating a self-destruct sequence on all his creations, including himself. Tony and Rhodey manage to save Pepper from the exploding devices. †

In the aftermath, Nick Fury informs Tony that while he is deemed "unsuitable" for the Avengers Initiative as a team member, S.H.I.E.L.D. wants him as a consultant. Tony accepts, albeit with his usual bravado. The film ends with Tony and Rhodey receiving medals for their heroism, and a post-credits scene shows S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson discovering Thor's hammer in New Mexico, further setting the stage for the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
